Waves Flashcards
(21 cards)
Vibration/disturbance or movement in space.They are classfied by what they move through and by how particles move through them.It also transfers energy WITHOUT transferring matter by using vibration.
Waves
Materials in which waves move through.It is a substance in which waves travel through and need to move in order.
Medium
It can travel through matter with or without any medium.
Electromagnetic Waves
It travels by propagation and is composed by electric field and magnetic field.
Electromagnetic waves
How is electric field created?
By a single motion or one tiny disturbance/motion/movement in space.
Which is first?Electric field or magnetic field?
Electric field first then Magnetic field.
Kinds of Electromagnetic Waves
R-adio waves
I-nfrared waves
M-icrowaves
V-isible light
U-ltraviolet Rays
X-rays
It requires a medium and vibration to travel.
Mechanical Waves
Kinds of Mechanical Waves
- Sound Waves
- Earthquake/Seismic Waves
- Water waves
- Waves that travel down a rope/spring
Particles move perpendicularly the direction/motion of the waves.(forms a RIGHT ANGLE)
Transverse Waves
Distance from crest to crest(or trough to trough); expressed in meters.
Wavelength
Distance of crest (or trough) from the midpoint of the waves.
Amplitude
Parallel to the motion of waves
Longitudinal Waves
In Longitudinal Waves, what is the crowded area causing a high-pressure region called?
Compression
In Longitudinal Waves,what is the spread out area causing a low-pressure region called?
Rarefaction
Number of waves that passed a fixed pointper second.
Frequency(f)
Unit of Frequency
Unit = Hertz(Hz)
F = 1 / T
TIME that takes a wave to travel a distance equal to wavelength.
Period (T)
Unit of Period
Unit = seconds
T = 1 / F
DISTANCE travelled by a wave crest in one period.
Wave Velocity
Unit of Wave Velocity
Unit = m/s
v = λ / T
