Waves Flashcards
(53 cards)
Pulse Def.
Is a single disturbance that is propagated from one end to another in a medium.
Amplitude Def.
The max. displacement of a particle from its rest position.
The principle of superposition
Superposition occurs when two or more waves overlap in the same place at the same time and intereference can be observed.
Types of superposition
Constructive and destructive.
Transverse wave def.
is a wave on which the direction of the particle’s vibration is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation
Crest
Highest point on a wave
Trough
Lowest point on a wave
Wavelength
The distance between two consecutive points that are in phase
Examples of a transverse wave
Water and light
wavelength symbol and unit
… and meters (m)
In phase
When two points on a wave are performing the same movement
Out of phase
When two points on a wave are moving with the same speed but in exactly the opposite direction to one another
Frequency def.
Is the no. of cycles of a wave per second
Frequency symbol and unit
f and Hertz(Hz)
Period def.
is the time taken to complete one cycle of a wave to pass a fixed point
Period symbol and unit
T and seconds (s)
Wave speed
Is the distance travelled by a wave in one second
Wave speed symbol and unit
v and m.s-1
Longitudinal waves
When particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of propagation of the waves
*Longitudinal waves wavelength is drawn…
starting from the middle of compression or rarefraction to the middle of the other one
Sound waves need medium (particles) to move?
Yes
Sound waves = vsolid>vliquid>vgas
Yes
Compression
Parts of the spring where the coils are pressed together
Rarefraction
Parts of the spring where the coils are stretched out
