Waves Flashcards

1
Q

What is a progressive wave?

A
  • A moving wave,
  • that transfers energy from one point to another,
  • without transferring any matter.

Q

Define phase difference and give 3 ways of measuring it

A
  • Amount one wave (or one point on a wave) lags behind another.
  • Measured in fractions of a cycle, degrees (o) or radians (rad).
  • One cycle = 360o = 2π rad.

Q

Define ‘in phase’ and ‘in anti-phase’ in terms of phase difference.

A
  • In phase
    – phase difference = 0 degrees or 0 rad
  • In anti-phase
    – phase difference = 180 degrees or π rad or ½ cycle.
