Waves Flashcards
(15 cards)
What creates waves?
Waves are created when a strong wind travels over a body of water for a x amount of time x being the fetch.
What factors influence waves?
- Strength of the wind
What are the characteristics of constructive waves?
Constructive waves bring in sand and other sediment and deposit it on the beach
What are the characteristics of a destructive wave?
Destructive waves wear away the sediment and break down the beach over long periods of time.
What are the four erosional processes?
1.Hydraulic Action: when a wave breaks against a cliff, air and water is forced into cracks in
the cliffs and increases pressure, causing rocks to break off.
What are the four erosional processes?
- Abrasion: When waves break, the sediment (rock) is thrown and rubbed against the cliff.
What are the four erosional processes?
Solution: Weak acids in sea water (caused through the transpiration of plants) will slowly
dissolve certain types of rock such as chalk and limestone as they contain calcium
carbonate
What are the four erosional processes?
Attrition: Waves cause rocks and pebbles to smash into each other and become smaller
and more rounded
What factors influence waves?
- Fetch, Fetch is the term used to determine the distance the wind has travelled over the body of water. The longer it travels, the bigger and stronger the wave.
What factors influence waves?
- Volume of water
What factors influence waves?
the more volume of water there is in the body of water the bigger it is
What factors influence waves?
Fetch is the term used to determine the distance the wind has travelled over the body of water. The longer it travels, the bigger and stronger the wave.
What factors influence waves?
Strength
What factors influence waves?
Depending on how strong the wind is the wave will vary in size and strength. The stronger the wind, the bigger and stronger the wave
