Waves Flashcards
(31 cards)
Medium
Any substance that a wave moves through
Mechanical Waves
A wave that transfers energy through matter
Transverse Wave
The direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular,or at right angles,to the direction of the disturbance
Longitudinal Wave
The wave that travels in the same direction as the disturbance
Crest
The highest point,or peak,of a wave
Trough
The lowest point,or valley,of a wave
Amplitude
The distance between a line through the middle of a wave and crest or trough
Wavelength
The distance from one wave crest to the very next crest
Frequency
The number of waves passing a fixed point in a certain amount of time
Reflection
The bouncing back of a wave after it strikes a barrier
Refraction
The bending of a wave as it enters a new medium at an angle,it bends,or refracts
Electromagnetic Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy through a field
Radiation
Energy that moves in the form of EM
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The range of all EM frequencies
Radio Waves
EM waves that have the longest wavelengths, the lowest frequencies, and the lowest energies
Microwaves
EM waves with shorter wavelengths, higher frequencies, and higher energy than other radio waves
Visible Light
The part of the EM spectrum that human eyes can see
Infrared Light
The part of the spectrum consists of EM frequencies between microwaves and visible light
Ultraviolet Light
The part of the EM spectrum consists of frequencies above those of visible light and partially below those x-rays
X-rays
Have frequencies from about 10/16 Hz to 10/21 Hz
Gamma Rays
Have frequencies from about 10/19 Hz to 10/24 Hz
Transmission
The passage of an EM wave through a medium
Absorption
The disappearance of an EM wave into the medium
Scattering
The spreading out of light rays in all directions, because particles reflect and absorb the light
