Waves and EM spectrum. Flashcards
(14 cards)
Low frequenchy to high frequency
Long wavelength to short wavelength.
Radio waves
Microwaves
Infrared
Visible light
Ultra Violet
X rays
Gamma Rays
Radio waves
Transmitted through the body without being absorbed
Infrared + Visible light
Reflected or absorbed by the skin causing heating too. Ir burns if it is too hot.
Ultraviolet
Absorbed by skin. Cause damage to cells on skin surface.
X rays and Gamma rays.
Cause mutations and damage cells too. Higher frequency transfers more energy causing more damage.
If a black object is left in the sun.
It asobrbs more light than emmited so it gets hotter.
If a white object is left in the sun.
If will reflect more light so it is harder to get warmer.
Transverse waves.
Perpendicular vibrations to the direction the wave travels.
All EM waves.
S-waves
Ripples and waves in water.
Longitudinal waves.
Parallel to the direction the wave travels.
They squash up and stretch out. Compressions is high pressure and rarefactions is low pressure.
Sound waves and P-waves.
Microwave uses
Used in microwave ovens.
Infrared uses
IR is given out by all hot objects. Used in cameras. IR radiation It can be used to transfer files between phones and laptops.
Visible light
Used in photography. This is how cameras create photos
X rays
View the internal structure of bodies. Used in bags at the airport.
Gamma Rays
Used to kill microbes in food keeping it freesher for longer.
