Waves Revision Homework Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is sound?
Sound is vibrations that travel through air or another medium and are heard when they reach the eardrum.
What causes sound to have different pitches or loudness?
The pitch of a sound depends on how quickly the air vibrates, and the loudness depends on how big the vibration of the air is.
What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound is is when the frequency of a sound wave is higher than 20kHz and our ears can’t detect it.
What are echoes?
An echo is when a sound bounces off of something and then comes back to your ear.
What is the difference between light and sound waves?
Sound waves need a medium to travel but light waves do not need a medium to travel.

Describe the primary and secondary colours of light
The primary colours of light are red, green and blue and the secondary colours are magenta, cyan and yellow, and together they all make white.
How can we see colour?
We can see colour because all the colours of light are shone onto an object and then all the other colours are absorbed except the one colour that you see which is reflected off the object.
Describe observations when mixing light colours
When mixing all light colours, you get white light and when you mix green + red you get yellow light, green + blue you get cyan light and red + blue you get magenta light.
