waves (tama na pls) Flashcards
(23 cards)
Waves
Disturbance that carry energy through a medium or empty space
Mechanical waves
Waves transmit energy in a particle-filled medium.
Electromagnetic wave
Transmitted in empty space or vacuum
Transverse wave
Particle in the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave
Longitudinal wave
Particles in the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave
Surface wave
Combination of transverse and longitudinal
Compression
area where particles are close to one another
Rarefaction
area where the particles are far from one another
Crest
High point of a wave
Trough
Low point of a wave
Wavelength
Distance between two successive crest or troughs
Frequency
number of complete waves passing a given point every second
Period
number of seconds it takes for one complete wave to pass through a single point
Wave speed formulas
V= λF or V= λ/T
Reflection
occurs when waves bounce back after striking a barrier
Refraction
waves bend due to the change in their velocity
Diffraction
property of waves travel around its end
Interference
two waves interact as they pass through a single medium at the same time
Constructive Interference
crest + crest / troughs + troughs = greater pulse
Destructive Interference
Crest + Troughs = lower pulse
Standing waves
reflected waves have the same amplitude, frequency, and speed as the original wave
