What is the name of the pattern of spots produced by chromatography
Chromatogram
What is the first step in chromatography?
Draw a line near the bottom of your sheet of paper using a pencil.
What should you add to the line you drew on the paper?
Add a spot of ink.
What type of container is used in the chromatography process?
A beaker.
What types of solvents can be used in chromatography?
Water, ethanol.
Why should the ink not touch the solvent initially?
You don’t want to dissolve the ink.
What is placed on top of the container during chromatography?
A lid.
Why is a lid placed on the container?
To stop the solvent from evaporating.
What happens as the solvent seeps up the paper?
It carries spots of ink as they separate at different rates.
What occurs if any dyes in the ink are insoluble?
They will stay on the baseline.
When should you take the paper out of the beaker?
When the solvent nearly reaches the top of the beaker.
What should you do after removing the paper from the beaker?
Leave the paper to dry.
Name three things chromatography is used for
Testing athletes urine for performance enhancing drugs
Testing unknown substances in crime scenes
Testing the solubility of different substances
What two phases are in all forms of chromatography
Mobile and stationary phase
What is the mobile phase , example?
The part of the experiment that can move, aka the SOLVENT( gas, water , ethanol ;ext)
What is the stationary phase, example?
The part of the experiment that does not move, AKA the paper
Substances are separated based on how attracted they are to each phase.
What happens to substances that are more attracted to the mobile phase?
What happens to substances that are more attracted to the stationary phase?
Mobile phase:
They will travel further up the paper
Stationary phase:
They will not travel as far
How to calculate RF value
Distance moved by substance divided by distance moved by solvent
When measuring the distance moved by the substance do u measure from the top middle or bottom
Middle
What is the purpose of paper chromatography in this context?
To identify a mixture of food colourings in a particular ink.
What is the first step in the paper chromatography process?
Add spots of the dyes and ink onto the panel line at regular intervals.
How do you determine if a specific dye is present in the ink mixture?
Compare the dye spots to the ink; if the same color dye appears and stops traveling at the same distance, the ink contains that dye.
True or False: If a dye spot is the same color and stops at the same distance as a spot from the ink, it indicates the ink contains that dye.
True
