Weather Review Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is Convection?
The transfer of thermal energy by the movement of fluid
What is Radiation?
The direct transfer of energy through space by electromagnetic waves
What is an Air Mass?
A huge body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and air pressure throughout
What is a Cirrus Cloud?
Wispy, feathery clouds made mostly of ice crystals that form at high levels
What is a Stratus Cloud?
Clouds that form in flat layers and often cover much of the sky
What is a Cumulus Cloud?
Fluffy, white clouds, that are often called fair-weather clouds
What is Wind?
The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of lower pressure
What is Condensation?
The process by which molecules of water vapor in the air become liquid water
What is Precipitation?
Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth’s surface.
What is a Cold Front?
The boundary where a cold mass moves in to replace a warmer air mass.
What is a Warm Front?
The boundary where a warm air mass moves in to replace a colder air mass
What are Cumulonimbus Clouds?
Thunderstorm Clouds
What is Low Pressure?
An air mass of warm, moist air that brings stormy weather with strong winds. Or pressure below average
What is High Pressure?
An air mass of cool, dry air that brings fair weather and light winds. Or pressure above average
What is Conduction?
The direct transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another that’s it is touching
