Weathering Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the types of weathering
Biological weathering caused by the action of plants or animals.
Chemical weathering caused by water as a weak acid.
Physical weathering caused by changes in temperature.
The types of limestone
Chalk, Jurassic limestone and Carboniferous limestone
Mechanical weathering
Freeze-thaw and onion-skin
Types of rock
Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks
What is the statement for biological weathering
Plants can grow in cracks in rocks. As their roots develop they can force the cracks to widen and the rock to break apart. Lichens and mosses can also grow on rocks. They release an acid which can cause the rock surface to crumble
Chemical weathering statement
As rainwater falls through the air it becomes a very weak type of acid. When this acidic water comes into contact with rock it starts to dissolve it. The rate at which it dissolves depends on the type of rock. Limestone, for example, dissolves very quickly. Many buildings are built of limestone and the result of chemical weathering can clearly be seen.
