WEEK 1 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Define case
the individual or entity in which data is collected from
Define variable
any characteristic, number, or quantity that can be measured or counted
Types of numerical data
Continuous and discrete
Types of categorical data
Nominal and ordinal
Difference between ordinal and nominal data
ordinal has an inherent ranking or order whereas nominal data does not
Difference between continuous and discrete data
continuous data can take on any value within a certain range (such as decimals, or fractions) whereas discrete can only take distinct values such as whole numbers which cannot be subdivided
Chart type for 1 nominal variable
pareto charts
Chart types for 1 ordinal variable
bar chart
Chart types for 1 continuous variable
histogram or boxplots
Chart types for 1 discrete variable
bar chart or histogram/boxplot
Define sample
a small data set that you obtain from a larger set of data to represent a whole
Define population
any complete group with at least one characteristic in common
Define statistics
the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data
Define parameter
the numerical characteristics that succinctly describe the features of a statistical population
chart type for two categorical variables and why
Clustered Bar Chart or Mosaic Plot
You’re comparing counts across groups
Chart for one categorical and one numerical variable and why
Box Plot, Bar Chart (grouped), or Histogram (faceted)
You’re comparing averages or distributions of a numeric variable across categories
Chart type for two numerical values and why
Scatter Plot, Line Graph (if time is involved)
You’re looking for correlation or trend between two numeric variables
