Week 1 - Intro Flashcards
(16 cards)
What is physiology
The study of how a structure functions or works
What are the 6 structural organisation in the body
Atom, tissues, organ, organ systems and organism
The 11 body systems
Integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive
What are necessary life functions
Maintaining boundaries, movements, responsiveness, digestion, metabolism, excretion, reproductive and growth
What is required for survival
Nutrients, oxygen, water, normal body temp and normal atmospheric pressure
What is homeostasis
Body functions interacting to create a stable internal environment
How does homeostatic control mechanisms work
A receptor responds to environmental change, a control centre which assesses the change and stimulates an effector
Negative feedback loop
Systems act to reduce or stop the initial stimulus
Positive feedback loop
System acts to increase the initial stimulus
What is the function of cells
All cells responds to stimulus, digest food, excrete, grow, move and metabolise
What is diffusion
Movement of a substance from higher to lower concentration
What is simple diffusion
Movement of a substance through a plasma membrane
Osmosis
Movement of water through plasma membrane
What is facilitated diffusion
Diffusion that require protein channels or carriers
What is filtration
Movement of a pressure gradient
What is the integumentary system useful for
Waterproof skin, produces vitamin D, excrete salt, regulates body temp, location of cutaneous nerve receptors
