Week 1 Lecture 2: Quality Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is quality assurance?
Quality assurance is the processes and practices undertaken by the lab that are necessary to ensure a test on a sample gives the correct result.
What are the components of quality assurance?
Quality assurance includes Quality Control, Training & Competency, Audit, and Quality Management System.
What is quality control?
Quality control is a method of assessing the procedure/process for accuracy and reproducibility to prevent the release of incorrect results.
What are the two main types of quality control?
The two main types of quality control are Internal and External.
What is internal quality control?
Internal quality control is in-house testing, usually known sample results run e.g. positive/negative or high/low control for the assay.
How can regular use of quality control be beneficial?
Regular use of quality control alongside statistical process control (SPC) can resolve questions of reliability.
What do SPC tools and procedures allow you to monitor?
SPC tools and procedures allow you to monitor process behaviour, e.g. bias.
What is an external quality assessment (EQA)?
EQA includes sending a sample known to the provider but not to the lab being assessed, treated as a normal sample.
What do high/low controls assess?
High/low controls assess the sensitivity of the test.
What does NEQAS ensure?
NEQAS ensures that hospitals are within consensus.
What does IQC assess?
IQC assesses precision through repetitive assays.
What does EQA assess?
EQA compares test results to a consensus value to assess accuracy.
What is the purpose of competency assessment for staff?
Competency assessment ensures all staff performing the process are trained and can work to the same standard.
What are the three different methods of audit?
The three different methods of audit are Vertical, Horizontal, and Witness/Examination.
What is quality management?
Quality management is a culture within an organisation focused on quality.
What does a Quality Management System (QMS) do?
A QMS in learning organisations has systems, mechanisms, and processes that enhance the services they provide.
What is the importance of learning from mistakes in quality management?
It is important to learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others.
What do Levi-Jennings charts evaluate?
Levi-Jennings charts evaluate QC for systematic error and random error.
What do Levi-Jennings charts consist of?
They consist of Mean, +/- 1 SD, and +/- 2 SD.
What should not be done with the same QC?
Re-running the same QC shouldn’t be done as temperature will change it.
