Week 1 Oral Cavity Flashcards

1
Q

Oral Cavity

A

n It begins at the lips and cheeks and extends posteriorly to the palatine tonsils, or tonsils
• The tonsils lie on each side of the throat between 2 folds of tissue, 1 in front and 1 in back- called the tonsillar pillars

Q

2 divisions of oral cavity

A

2 divisions of the oral cavity
(i) Vestibule: space that exists between the lips or cheeks and the teeth
(il) Oral cavity proper: area surrounded by the teeth back to the palatine tonsils
#This includes the floor of the mouth, hard and soft palates

The Vestibule
Lips:
Vermillion zone:

A

The Vestibule
Lips: junction between skin of face and oral cavity
Vermilion zone: transitional zone of reddish tiss between the dry skin of the face and moist mucos of the oral cavity (lips)

Philtrum

A

Philtrum: small depression at the midline of the upper lip (cleft lip may be formed at the lateral junction of the philtrum)

Q

Alveolar mucousa

A

Alveolar mucosa; mucosa lying against the alveolar bone, loosely attached and moveable, reddish due to many blood vessels.
Mucogingival junction; the point where

Q

Maxillary Labial Frenum

A

Maxillary labial frenum: fold of connective tissue attached to the upper alveolar mucosa, more pronounced than lower frenum
If the frenum is very firm, the central incisors may not be able to penetrate it causing the teeth to be pushed aside causing a space.

Q

Mandibulaur Labial Frenum

A

Mandibular labial frenum: same description as maxillary, but relating to the lower alveolar mucosa, could cause gingival recession by pulling down on the tissue when the lip is tensed

Q

Buccal Aveolar bone
Bony Growths

A

In a large portion of the population, on the buccal cortical plate of the mandible and maxilla, are bony growths called Exostosis

17
Q

The Oral Cavity Proper
Hard palate

A

• Hard palate: anterior portion of the palate that has transverse ridges, shape/size vary from individual, could be wide or narrow, high vault, or flat.
(i) Rugae - ridges of epithelial and connective tissue (often burned by hot foods) found on the anterior portion of the hard palate, and covered by keratinized epithelium
2) Incisive papilla - bulge of tissue at midline behind maxillary central incisors

18
Q

Hard Palate

A

Hard Palate
Excess bone growth can occur in the midline of the hard palate referred to as a maxillary torus or torus palatinus

19
Q

The Oral Cavity Proper
Soft Palate

A

• Soft palate: posterior nonbony portion of the palate that stretches back from the hard palate
(i) Uvula - midline muscular structure that hangs from most posterior portion which aids in speech and swallowing

20
Q

Lateral Borders

A

• Lateral borders: the teeth and mucosa confines the lateral boarders of the oral cavity proper

21
Q

Posterior Lateral

A

• Posterior lateral: bounded by tonsils and pillars
(i) Palatoglossal arch is the anterior pillar (ii) Palatopharyngeal arch is the posterior pillar

22
Q

Oral cavity Proper

A
23
Q

The Oral Cavity Proper
• Posterior borders:

A

• Posterior borders:
(i) Retromolar pad - small elevation of tissue posterior to the mandibular third molar (8’s)
(ii) Fauces - space between left and right tonsils, ask client to say “ahhh” allows you to see the fauces

24
Q

Tongue

A
  • The underside or ventral side of the tongue shows many blood vessels close to the surface
  • Lingual frenum is the fold of tissue extending from area near tip of the tongue to the floor of the mouth.
  • If this frenum is attached close to the tip of the tongue, the tongue will have limited movement (ankyloglossia - “tongue tied”)
Tissue beneath tongue is one of the thinnest in the oral cavity.
25
Q

Floor of Mouth

A

• At base of lingual frenum is a small elevation on each side known as
• Sublingual caruncles
• This is the opening for the ducts of 2 major salivary glands, submandibular and sublingual glands
• Extending from sublingual caruncles along the floor of the mouth on either side is a fold of tissue called
• Sublingual fold, small openings for the sublingual salivary gland are found along here

26
Q

Sublingual Carincle

A

Floor of the mouth:
- Sublingual caruncle are small elevations on each side of the base of the lingual frenum where the sublingual and submandibular ducts open

27
Q

Sublingual Fold

A

Extending from the sublingual caruncle back along the floor of the mouth on either side is a fold of tissue called the sublingual fold
