Week 10 Flashcards

1
Q
A

Can temproary store glycogen as a carbohydrate

Glycogen catabolism (glycogenolysis)
Getting glucose from storage
A Amylase and glucosidases breaks down polysaccharide chain (in digestion)
Broken down into units of glucose 1 phosphate > converted to glucose 6 phosphate and enters glycolysis

Extra 1 atp molecule preserved per g6p

Q

Glucogeenesis

A

New glucose creation
Substrates for gluconeogenesis

Pryuvate, lactate, glycerol , amino acids and all TCA intermediates can be utilised

Fatty acids cannot = yields acetyl - CoA
Acetyl coa cannot be converted bac to pyruvate (irreversible reaction )
Acetyl coa cannot single handely produce oxaloactate (4c) or pyruvate (6c) via TCA cycle
Happens in the liver (and kidneys)
