Week 11 Flashcards
Basal ganglia
Group of nuclei in the base of the cerebral hemispheres
-necessary for the initiation, control, and cessation of muscle activity
What are the 4 cortico-cortico circuits the basal ganglia is involved with
Skeletomotor- involved in control of voluntary movements, balance and gait
Oculomotor- eye movement control
Limbic- emotional control and motivation
Prefrontal- planning, persistence, memory, spatial ability
Function of basal ganglia
Critical for initiating movement, and regulating movement force
Direct route (D1)
Net cortical excitation (reduced inhibition from GPi)
-movement initiation and maintenance
Indirect route (D2)
Net cortical inhibition (increases inhibition from GPi)
-stopping and stillness
