Q

What does restorative justice entail?

A

The application of restorative justice principles can be varied in its
emphasis, for example:
– Community
– Victim
– Offender
• When this happens, we see a blended approach being adopted or
a hybridisation of the criminal justice system with the other facets
of the justice and welfare models (Cunneen, White, & Richards,
2015, p. 356)
• Examples:
– Victim-offender mediation dialogue
– Family group conferencing
– Circle sentencing or peacemaking circles
– Reparative probation
– Balanced restorative

Q
How can restorative justice principles
be integrated into the existing criminal
justice system in ways that modify or
transform the operation of this
framework as a whole?
A

• Restorative social justice could be employed to build
communities guided as it were by the following
concepts (Cunneen, White, & Richards, 2015, p.
358):
– Solidarity
• Social inclusion as opposed to social exclusion
• There must be no “othering” process involved
– Compensation
– Community empowerment
