Week 13 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Food chain
The passing of materials and energy from one organism to another
Food Web
Shows how all the food chains relate to eachother
Ecological pyramid
Show energy relationships between populations in an ecosystem
Producers
Have the most energy
Herbivores (Primary consumers)
Eat only producers
Carnivores (Secondary Consumers)
Eat herbivores and other carnivores
Omnivores
Eat producers, herbivores, carnivores, other omnivores
Decomposer
Return the energy from the producers and consumers to the soil
Independent organisms
One that exists without the aid of members of the same species
-Except for reproduction
Mimicry
When organisms that aren’t dangerous, but they mimic another organisms that are
Camouflage
The act of hiding from predators or disguising yourself from prey
Warning coloration
Allows others to know that you are dangerous
Scavenger
A scavenger is an organism that mostly consumes decaying biomass, such as meat or rotting plant material.
Where is the most energy in the ecological pyramid?
Producers (the bottom of the pyramid)
Couple relationships
Animals that mate for life
Commensalism
A symbiotic relationship between two populations or individuals that benefits one and does not hurt or help the other
Mutualism
A symbiotic relationship between two populations or individuals that is beneficial to both
Obligatory mutualism
Both organisms must be together or they will die
Social insects
Ants, termites, wasps, and bees
Parasite
A parasite is an organism that lives on or in host organism and gets its food from or at the expense of its host.
Host
An organism that is infected with or is fed upon by a parasitic or pathogenic organism
