What are example of chronic pain?
migraine, temproromandibular, fribomy., neck pain etc.
What defines chronic pain?
Pain longer than 3 months
What is a special side effect of chronic pain?
The use of opioids to treat chronic pain which has led to opioid crisis
What is an economic burden of chronic pain?
Cost of healthcare, lost productivity, and disability. Increases cost of healthcare
What is the patient “homogeneity or uniformity myth” in chronic pain?
The idea that all patients experience the same pain and are grouped as one group
What are some older approaches of chronic pain?
Focus on biomedical approaches such as treating tissue damages as one would with acute pain
What is the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain?
It is not just one thing like tissue damage but the result of many things like the biology, psychological, and social factors
What are NSAIDs?
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like antidepressants, and muscle relaxants
What are interventional techniques?
Includes nerve blocks, injections like steroids and spinal cord stimulation
What is TENS?
delivers electrical pulses to the skin to stimulate nerve
endings
What is ACT?
Acceptance and commintment therapy encourages individuals to accept painful sensations and focus on desired behaviors
