Week 2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
It came as a result of the transition from traditional music instruments and the use of recording materials like vinyl records, compact cassettes, and compact discs to the current digital technology in music and recording.
electronic music
It is the process of creating music using computer synthesizing or producing digital audio signals.
electronic music
He is considered as the “Father of Electronic Music”. A French composer who spent most of his career and life in the United States of America. Varése’s music highlights rhythm and timber. He is the proponent of the world “organized sound,” which means a grouping of rhythms and timbers to define music itself. He added one layer of sound to the polyphony to create a new form of sound.
EDGARD VICTOR ACHILLE CHARLES VARÉSE (1883-1965)
can be defined as sounds generated by electronic signals of different frequencies. Sound can be modified by the use of a sound synthesizer.
SYNTHESIZED SOUND
In 1947, a group of music technicians in a Paris radio station, led by Pierre Schaeffer, started to experiment with musique concrete. It is music made up of natural sounds and sound effects that are recorded and altered by changing the speed of the records. The cutting and splicing of new sounds into new combinations were enabled through this evolution.
A. MAGNETIC TAPE RECORDING
is a device for combining sound generators and sound modifiers in one package. It has an integrated control system.
B. SYNTHESIZERS
It is an analog programmable electronic music synthesizer, pioneered and created by the RCA Corporation in 1955. This could generate any imaginable sound or combined sounds. The first ______________, an instrument of awesome dimensions, was developed by the American acoustical engineers Harry Olson and Herbert Belar in 1955 at the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) laboratories at Princeton, New Jersey. The information was fed to the synthesizer encoded on a punched paper tape. It was designed for research into the properties of sound and attracted composers seeking to extend the range of available sound or to achieve total control of their music.
electronic sound synthesize
Another analog synthesizer, was pioneered and commercially released in the mid-1960s. Musicians used this instrument in their performances, including Pink Floyd and The Beatles, both are famous rock bands. It is developed by the American physicist Robert Moog, had two five-octave keyboards that controlled voltage changes (and thus pitch, timbre, attack, decay of tone, and other aspects of sound), allowing the composer or musician an almost infinite variety of tonal control. This type of analogue technology became the basis of both modular and portable synthesizers mass-produced in the 1960s and ’70s.
MOOG SYNTHESIZER
An electronic musical instrument, which broadened the uses of synthesizers not only in live performances but also in the film industry. This synthesizer was named after its Russian inventor,____________, who patented this device in 1928. This device was capable of editing movie soundtracks and popular music. It was unique as it is played without being touched. Its two antenna makes the pitch and the volume. The vertical antenna makes the pitch higher while the horizontal antenna makes the pitch softer. Because there is no physical contact with the instrument, playing the theremin in a precise melodic way requires practiced skill and keen attention to pitch.
Leon Theremin, THEREMIN
Is a sound generator featuring a graph representation of the shape of any sound wave. The graphs were described by a series of numbers, which were translated by a device known as a digital analog converter, into sound tape playable on a tape record. It was necessary to devise a computer program that would translate musical elements (duration, pitch, timbre, dynamics, and tempo) into numbers. Combining Electronic sounds with live performances are already the trend nowadays. Most of the young composers are using media when writing music. Synthesizers are being combined with orchestral players.
C. ELECTRONIC COMPUTER
is a musical piece which consist of two or more voices or instruments that are being played or started at different intervals. A round is also a canon which is a repeated song followed by another voice in which the first voice started.
CANON
is performed by three singers or instrumentalists. This started with the first singer or instrument player and at a certain period, followed by the second performer of the same musical piece from the starting point, and followed again by the third performer of the same musical piece in a clockwise performance.
CANON D MAJOR
It is a 20th century music in which undetermined elements are left to chance and/or some elements of a composed work’s realization are left to the performers’ discretion. The composers use the element of chance as part of the composition that produces sound. The performers are given the freedom to choose the order or to arrange the structure of the piece.
CHANCE MUSIC
is also called “aleatory music”, which is derived from the Latin word “alea,” meaning “dice.”
CHANCE MUSIC
As the name suggests, it is a composition created by chance rather than its logical order. It may also be called indeterministic music. It is a style of music where different sounds, musical or nonmusical, are assembled and combined together to create any kind of musical composition based on chance. The result of experimentation by chance is the composed song to be played, and that will result to aleatory or chance music.
CHANCE MUSIC
He is an American avant-garde composer, was the son of an inventor. He was considered the “Father of Indeterminism.” To escape being influenced by his own likes and dislikes, he then sought to remove the creative process from his compositions, often relying on coin flips and dice rolls to decide where or how to place a certain note.
JOHN CAGE (1912-1992)
In 1993, Steven M. Martin produced a documentary titled Theramin: An Electronic Odyssey. It shows the history of the instrument and interviews with music industry legends such as Robert Moog, Todd Rundgren, Brian Wilson as well as Leon Theremin himself. Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey (1993) - IMDb
