What is Down Bow and when is it used?
Down bow is more powerful and strong compared to upbow, it is often used in loud or accented passages.
What is Up Bow and when is it used?
Up bow is less powerful and strong compared to Down Bow. It starts off soft and then gets louder, so it is best to use it in crescendo passages.
What is the important thing to remember when a string passage is slurred?
All of the notes under the slur should be performed with one bow.
What is pizzicato?
Plucking or picking the strings with the fingertips.
What is arco?
When bowing is to be resumed following a pizzicato section.
What are the two types of staccato in string writing?
Separate bow staccato and slurred staccato
What is separate bow staccato?
Staccato writing where each note is played with a separate bow - the player must keep changing direction.
What is slurred staccato?
Staccato writing but the passage is still played with one bow.
What is unmeasured tremolo?
A tremolo as fast as possible, and the player can play freely. Notated using three strokes.
What is measured tremolo?
Tremolo that is rhythmically precise and subdivided into equal note values. Notated using one or two strokes.
What is fingered tremolo?
Tremolo that is created by moving the fingers. In this module, the interval for this should not be larger than a fifth.
What is bowed tremolo?
Tremolo that is created by quickly moving the bow.
What is the lowest note on the violin?

What are double and triple stops?
When a string instrument plays multiple notes at the same time on separate strings.
What word is used to cancel out Divisi? (Div.)
Unison (Unis.)
What is the role of violin 1?
To carry the largest share of important material.
What is the role of violin 2?
To play secondary melodies and enable the violin 1 to rest.
