Week 2 Flashcards
(39 cards)
What is mallet finger?
Inability to extend the DIP joint
What is another name for mallet finger?
Baseball finger
What is the common reason for Mallet finger?
Result of direct force aimed at the distal dip of the finger, resulting in extensor tendon disruption
What is boutonniere deformity?
Hyperextension of DIP joint and flexion of the PIP joint
What is the common reason for boutonniere deformity?
Result of direct force or cut to the top of a flexed PIP joint, or due to arthritis
What muscle is commonly hurt because of the boutonniere deformity?
The extensor digitorum
What is a Swan neck deformity?
Hyperextension of PIP joint and flexion of the DIP joint
What often results from the swan neck deformity?
Loss or weakness of flexor digitorum superficialis
What is a Dupuytren’s contracture?
Painful nodules on the tendons that begin to tighten.
idiopathic
How does Dupuytren’s contracture present?
Most commonly with MCP, PIP and often DIP flexion of the 4th and 5th fingers.
Dermal pit looks like a smiley face
What is trigger finger?
Painful, swollen nodule prevents the tendon from gliding through the tendon sheath.
How does the patient present with trigger finger?
Shows a quick and abrupt extension moment once the nodule passes.
What are the contraindications for finger braces?
Bony fingers
Arthritis
What is de Quervains’s Tenosynovitis?
Inflammation of the extensor pollicis longus and brevis tendon
How does the patient usually present with de quervain’s tenosynovitis?
Irritation and pain during ulnar deviation when tendons pass through the tendon sheath
How can you diagnose de quervain’s tenosynovitis?
Finkelstein’s maneuver
What is the finkelstein’s maneuver?
The thumb is first flexed and then covered by fingers 2-5.
The radiocarpal joint is paced in ulnar deviation
Pain associated with this task is indicated for a positive test.
What nerve roots form the brachial plexus?
C5 C6 C7 C8 T1
What are the orthotic treatment goals for SCI?
Replace lost function of upper extremity Replace/assist weakened motor power Supplement surgical reconstruction Prevent/treat edema Maintain bi-manuality Ease paincause be traction on unsupported nerves and vessels
What nerves make up the arm?
Axillary
Musculocutaneus
Radial
What nerves make up the forearm?
Radial
Ulnar
Median
What nerve roots are associated with the Axillary nerve?
C5, C6
What nerve roots are associated with the musculocutaneous nerve?
C5, C6
What nerve roots are associated with the radial nerve?
C6-T1
