What is a group?
Attraction between members, friendship between members, some shared goals, some shared characteristics
What are Teams?
Teams may have attraction, friendship, shared goals or shared characteristics. But additionally have a higher degree of shared purpose of these and a greater sense of identity.
How many stages are there to the formation of a team?
Four (4)
What are the stages of team formation?
Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing (adjourning)
What is Forming?
The familiarisation with other members
of the team and the organisation,
comparisons within the team, determination
of membership, communication established and relationships tested.
What is Storming?
Resistance to leaders, managers,
coaches, interpersonal conflicts, emotional
conflict and role resistance
What is Norming
Solidarity, cooperation, role stability &
acceptance, development of mutual respect, focus
on opponents, increased satisfaction, group
cohesion starts here
What is Performing?
Members beg y in to seriously interact
& support each other, focus on solving problems
as a group, interpersonal relationships stabilise,
support systems develop, real performance and
team cohesion starts here
At what stages can Cohesion be measured?
During Norming and Performing Stages
Carron (1982) identifies cohesion as . . . ?
both dynamic and multidimensional
What is Social Cohesion?
Sticking together – assumes that there must
be some liking or respect shared between group members
What is task Cohesion?
United in the pursuit of goals – acceptance of aims, knowing what the team is for and what has to be achieved
What are Roles?
A set of behaviours required/expected of a team member occupying a certain position within a team.
What are the important roles that are held both on and off ‘pitch’?
Facilitators and Harmonisers.
How many parts do good role relations contain?
Three (3)
What are the three role parts?
Role Clarity
Role Acceptance
Role Empathy
What is Role Clarity?
knowing exactly what role is within team (goals ?), knowing how this role contributes to the team as a whole
What is Role Acceptance?
Willingness to adopt and maintain role
What is Role Empathy?
understanding the roles and contributions of others on the team
What are Norms?
Levels of performance or patterns of behaviour to be adopted by the whole team
Why are Norms essential?
for performance and behaviour.
What is the importance of Norms?
To adherence to norms, and establish individual contributions to normative behaviour
With reference to ‘Team Climate’ what do norms need?
Social Support Distinctiveness Fairness Similarity Proximity
What does Steiner’s Model (1972) address?
Team Productivity
