Week 3 Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is water pollution?
The introduction of pollutants into water bodies that after the quality and has harmful effect on living organisms or make water unsuitable for the desired uses
What is a a point source of pollution?
Contamination discharged from specific origin and identifiable sources
What is a non point source of pollution?
Contamination from diffuse sources over a broad area
What causes sediment pollution?
Suspended solids in water
What are natural causes of sediment pollution?
Soil erosion, storm, weathering
What are anthropogenic causes of sediment pollution?
Erosion of agricultural lands, logging, over grazing, strip mines, construction
What causes color in water?
Dissolved organic carbon and natural organic matter
What are some dissolved substances in water?
Minerals, natural organic matter, nutrients and oxygen
Why is high levels of suspended solids bad?
Increases water temperature and decreases dissolved oxygen levels
How do suspended solids effect water chemistry?
Suspended particles absorb mor heat from solar radiation than water molecules. Warmer water can not hold as much DO as cold water.
