Angiography process

A
  • Contrast is introduced into a proximal artery
  • rapid sequence of images required
  • may need to remain in the hospital overnight because of the arterial cannulation (minimum lay flat for 6 hours)

Subtraction Angiography

A

Take everything in the picture away and only keep the blood flow - visualise blood flow only

Angiography Indications

A

To demonstrate acute or chronic disorders of the blood vessels
- atherosclerotic disease
- ischaemic disease
- dissection
- traumatic rupture
- chronic occlusions
- stenosis
- thrombus

A
  • pregnancy
  • allergy to contrast
  • contrast - renal impairment
  • contrast - unstable patient
  • inability to lie flat
  • recent barium procedure

  • Allows for selective catheterisation of specific blood vessels for improved assessment
  • Therapeutic procedures may be performed immediately following a diagnostic angiogram
