What is a structured interview?
A structured interview follows a standardized set of questions that are asked in the same way. It is content focused.
What is a semi-structured interview?
An interview where there are some pre-formed questions, but the participant still can answer them how they feel best.
What is an unstructured interview?
The participant can speak about the topic of the interview how they please.
What are some of the strengths of interviewing?
To fill a gap in knowledge
that other methods cannot & to collect a diversity of
meaning, opinion, and
experience.
What is a interview guide?
A list of general issues you want to cover
What is a way to form good interview questions?
Using language that is commonly understood to your participants
What are the two types of questions that are asked in interviews?
Primary questions and secondary questions.
What is a primary question?
Opening discussion on a new theme or topic. “Who did you vote for in the last election?”
What is a secondary question?
A question to follow up on a question already asked
What are the six question types?
Descriptive, storytelling, opinion, structural, contrast, and devils advocate
How many brothers and sisters do you have? What kind of question is this?

What do you consider the most important issue for university students in Canada? What kind of question is this?

What are the different stressors you experience during the school year?

Devils advocate
What is funneling?
An interview style where there is an initial focus on general issues that then become more specific
What is a pyramid?
More abstract and general questions are asked at the end
What is nudging?
Used to continue a line of conversation in a interview.
What is a summary?
Paraphrasing what someone has said in a interview.
What are receptive cues?
Encourages a participant to continue speaking, such as nodding or smiling.
