Leadership vs Management

What is leadership
“Leading others towards a shared goal by fostering motivation, co-ordinating the process, giving direction and organising the process
Leaders can be
-Reciprocal: Leaders and followers influence each other
-Transactional: Working towards a joint reward - leaders and followers exchange resources
-Transformational: Leaders inspire followers and motivate
-Co-operative: suggestions made by leaders are voluntarily accepted by followers
Lots of theoretical domains for leadership, but what are the agreed core properties underpinning leadership
- It is aspirational
- It is future oriented
- It revolves around collective responsibility
Concepts of good and bad are subjective, a leader is effective when they successfully influence leaders to reach goals that have been set, a “bad leader” could still be an effective leader.
Good leaders:
-Integrity
-Competence
-Decisiveness
-Vision
Bad leaders
-Dark triad traits of narcissism, machiavellian, psychopathy
-Machiavellian leaders: Do anything to maintain power and status
-Narcissistic leaders : Self-important, arrogance, lack of empathy - do anything to maintain power
Traits associated with good leadership
-Sociability
-Confidence
-Intelligence
-Need for dominance
-Also linked to “The Big Five”, especially openness to experience + conscientiousness
Dark Triad traits and leadership?
-Diller et al (2021) did a study that found that dark triad traits were positively correlated with higher leadership levels
-Intercorrelation between the dark triad traits
-Importance of promoting ethical values, and the importance of trust and teamwork
-Volmer et al (2016) found Narcissism had no adverse impact
-But found machiavellianism and psychopathy had poorer wellbeing and career outcomes for employees.
