Formal Structure =

= maps lines of decision making authority, helps ppl understand assignments, shows formal lines of communication, reveals how managers and new personnel fit into org, structure – understand relationships and formalized power
Disadvantage of the Organizational Chart =
= DOESN’T SHOW INFORMAL STRUCTURE AND RELATIONSHIPS that can still affect way things work, does not indicate degree of authority held by each line position; may not reflect how things actually are, can confuse authority with status
Functional organization =
= organizing around SPECIALTIES (nursing is a general component)
Service Line organization =
= focus on functions to PRODUCE A SPECIFIC SERVICE (nursing spread out through structure of designated product line)
Flat organization =
= focuses on DELEGATION OF DECISION MAKING to professionals doing the work
Flat organizations is more ______ -> better for ____ improvement
Decentralized, quality
Organizational Culture =
= values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment
- sum of total values, languages, past hx of sacred cows, formal and informal communication networks, rituals

= Nurses at every level play a role in decisions that affect nursing activity throughout system

Magnet Hospitals =
= Decentralized environment with org structures that emphasize open, participatory management
- Autonomous, self-managing, self-governing climate -> allows nurses to fully practice clinical expertise, flexible staffing, adequate staffing ratios, clinical career opportunities
Committees =
= productive if have appropriate # of members, prepared agendas, clearly outline tasks, and effective leadership
Too many committees =
= sign of poorly designed organizational structure
Beware of groupthink =
= too much conformity of group norms -> opinions/ideas lack merit
Power =
= the authority and ability to get things accomplished
- capacity/potential to get others to do something they would not ordinarily do
