week 6 Flashcards
CPR and chain of survival
Cardiac arrest
The electrical system of the heart malfunctions
Identified by (cardiac arrest)
- Unconscious
* No cardiac output (no pulse)
CPR
CPR is the technique of chest compressions combined with rescue breathing. Also known as basic life support (BLS).
Purpose of CPR: Provides sufficient vital organ blood flow to preserve life until definitive procedures can be performed
CPR – IPPV (Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation)
Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (IPPV) is indicated when a patient is in acute respiratory distress or arrest,
requiring assistance to reach adequate ventilation
Bag Valve Mask (BVM)
Difficult Bag-Mask Ventilation: MOANS
M: Mask Seal O: Obese: BMI > 26 kg/m (or obstructed airway) A: Aged: > 55 years N: No teeth S: Snores or Stiff neck
Shock-able Rhythms
- Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) and
2. Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (VT).
VF
Ventricular Fibrillation (VF) • Chaotic, totally irregular, totally unpredictable
Very Fucked
Pulseless VT
Pulseless Ventricular Tachycardia (VT)
• Large ‘swoops’ that are regular and predictable
Defibrillation
Causes the entire myocardium to depolarise
at once.
This gives the electrical system a chance to
‘reset’ and hopefully re-start again properly.
