a word has multiple closely related meanings (e.g. chicken meat vs chicken bird)
what does polysemy contain?
metaphor, image metaphor, and metonymy
what is metonymy?
one thing standing in for another (e.g. Jane Austen’s on the shelf)
what is image metaphor?
a concrete object (e.g. sapphire eyes)
what is conceptual metaphor
an abstract concept (e.g. boiling with rage)

referent in the real world (e.g. tree)

all possible referents (e.g. acacia trees, family trees, syntactic trees, etc)

what is a non-specific referent
a broad or general referent (e.g. possums make bad pets)
what is a specific referent?
A specific referent (e.g. that possum there)
