Week 7 - Smart Packaging Flashcards
(10 cards)
Define smart packaging (SP)
SP - packaging equipped to do additional functions (not only acts as packaging to protect drug)
- e.g. help patient with adherence + compliance, share results, use with an app
Example:
Embedding tablet packaging with electronic chip
- allows supplier to collect data on environmental conditions (temp., humidity) during storage, transportation etc.
What 2 technologies are used in SP
List the 3 different classes of SP
- Active packaging
- interacts with products + intervene with factors (light, O2) to benefit product quality / shelf life - Intelligent packaging
- has indicators + sensors that are on packaging to give info. about the state of the product - Connected packaging
- enables customer to interact with product (e.g. QR codes)
List the 4 types of SP
- Connected pharmaceutical packaging
- Compliance encouraging packaging
- Anti-counterfeiting packaging
- Eco-friendly packaging
What is the use of “Connected pharmaceutical packaging”
inc. benefits of SP to the product, patient and healthcare professionals
Enables interaction between pt and product or HCP
USES:
1. Monitoring Shelf-life
- give info. about safety = influences efficacy
- Simplifying Administration
- notifs / alarms to remind patient
- pt can monitor their adherance
- Pt scans code = app opens + can input info. about symptoms, compliance, vitamins / new prescriptions etc. - Process Info.
- Info. inputted can be accessed by HCP
- direct link between pt and HCP
- HCP can have an idea about pts adherance
What is the use of “Compliance encouraging packaging”
inc. benefits of SP to the product, patient and healthcare professionals
Uded to improve medication compliance
- through printed electronics (on packaging) or internet (scan QR code)
- Helps patient keep track of medication schedule
- Gives pts safety guidelines
EXAMPLES:
- Electronic blister packs: records time + date drug was removed from pack
- monitors compliance
- patient can log electroncially SE and treatment efficacy
- Carton board-blister: works in same way
- sends info. to electronic database
- HCP can use info to track compliance / medication intake
- can send messages to pts family about their dosing schedule = can help adminster / remind pts to take meds
Printed:
- guidebooks
- treatment plan overview leaflet
- diary for daily tracking
What is the use of “Anti-counterfeiting packaging”
inc. benefits of SP to the product, patient and healthcare professionals
Prevents others producing similar products BUT selling it as the authentic product
3 Types of anti-counterfeiting packaging:
1. Overt (visible features)
- allow USERS to VERIFY AUTHENTICITY
- features difficult or expensive to reproduce
- features are designed in a way they cant be removed or destroyed
- e.g. holograms
- e.g. OVD (optically variable = colour change when hold package at diff. angles)
- e.g. QR code (scan and see legit website + info about product)
- Covert (hidden features)
- allows BRAND OWNER to IDENTIFY counterfeit products
- users is not aware of these
- e.g. invisble printing
- e.g. digital watermark (printed on dosage form but not visible to naked eye) - RFID (radio frequency identifier)
- is a unique identifier for product
- conveys info abot drug + its tracking
- allows identification of object through wireless communication
What is the use of “Eco-friendly packaging”
inc. benefits of SP to the product, patient and healthcare professionals
- Made from almost 100% recycled materials
- Use minimum film / foil
- Unbleached paperboards
NOTE: packaging shouldnt compromise safety of drug
What are the advantages of SP
- Child resistant
- e.g press and twist cap
- e.g. applying pressure at 2 points before drug released - Improved patient experience
- Improved compliance / adherance
- Enhanced product protection
- Improved sustainability + environmental awareness
What are the disadvantages of SP
- High cost
- Risk of data theft
- Risk of technology malfunction
- Not user friendly for all e.g. elderly
