Q

While sleeping, the feeling that you can’t run quickly or move the way you want in your dreams is likely your mind’s interpretation of what physical condition?

A

“Sleep paralysis” While we sleep, our body enters a state of sleep paralysis wherein our muscles don’t respond to the stimuli and situations that we are perceiving. This may lead to the in-dream interpretation that our body is not responding the way we want it to, such as running away from or avoiding dangers that we would in our waking lives.

Q

If we have a dream of riding on a bus while eating a tuna sandwich, what content label would Sigmund Freud assign to the literal interpretation of the sandwich?

A

“Manifest content” According to Sigmund Freud, the sandwich would be considered manifest content. Manifest content is the literal interpretation of the dream without any subtext or ulterior meaning (i.e. sometimes a sandwich is just a sandwich), whereas the latent content is the underlying meaning of the objects in the dream (e.g., perhaps the tuna sandwich represents an unfulfilled desire to visit the ocean).

Q

What did Sigmund Freud think was the reason for Anton Mesmer’s success in treating psychological disorders using magnets?

A

“Suggestion” While Sigmund Freud was initially intrigued by the idea of treating psychological disorders with magnets, he quickly began to believe that the apparent success of these treatments did not come from the magnets ability to realign a person’s fields, but rather came from the power of suggestion created by Mesmer’s insistence that the treatment would work. Nowadays we would refer to this as the “placebo” effect.

Q

What is it called when a person under hypnosis recalls situations or people that never happened or existed, simply because they were encourage to remember them?

A

“Confabulation” Recalling things that didn’t happen under hypnosis is an example of confabulation. Although the person is recalling untrue events and presenting them as fact, it is not technically lying because the person, presumably, is not attempting or intending to deceive anyone.

Q

What type of psychological research is not interested in group averages, but rather focuses on the performance of individuals?

A

“Individual Differences” While a great deal of psychological research and knowledge is based on the performance of the “average” individual – by combining the performance of many people into a unitary measure – the field of “Individual Differences” is focused on what makes one person different from another. Thus, this field explains a person’s behavior, and especially his or her deviation from average performance, in terms of factors that are likely to vary from one person to another, such as intelligence.
