Week one Flashcards
What are the three types on injections
intramuscular
Subcutaneous
Intradermal
Name the types of syringes
Hypodermic Insulin Tuberculin Larger syringes for wound irrigation Safety syringes (0.5-60 mL) plain-tip, luer lock Reusable plungers Pre-filled cartridges Pre-filled syringes
What size needle is used for intradermal injections
25-27 gauge
3/8 to 5/8”
What size needle is used for Subcutaneous injections
25-27 gauge
3/8 to 5/8”
What size needle is used for intramuscular injection
20-25 guage
what is the length of the needle used for an IM injection into the deltoid
1-1.5”
what is the length of the needle used for an IM injection into the VL
5/8 -1”
What is the length of the needle used for an IM injection to the VG
1-1.5”
What are three needle safety rules
DO NOT recap needle after injection
use the safety syringe as directed to cover the needle
discard in a puncture proof container
List the general steps for giving an injection
- check physician orders (drug dose route and frequency)
- make sure you have the right needle and correct site for injection
- Draw up drug and complete first and second check
- check identity of the client
- provide privacy
- explain procedure and medication
- 3rd check at bedside
How long do you wipe the top of a medication vial?
15 seconds
What are some important tips when using an ampule
Tap ampule
Snap the neck with alcohol wipe away from self
use a filter needle
place a new needle
What must you remember when using an insulin pen
always prime the needle with 2 units, repeat until you see insulin through the needle
and use at a 90 degree angle
What are the IM injection sites
Ventrogluteal
Deltoid
Vastus Lateralis
When is VG preferred?
Good for large volume, viscous and irritating medications
What are the landmarks of the VG injection
Gluteus medius and minimus
Anterior superior iliac spine
dorsal crest of the iliac spine
What are the landmarks for a VS injection
Greater trochanter of the femur and the lateral femoral condyle
How much can you inject to the deltoid
less than 2 mL
Subcutaneous tips
- avoid 2” around the umbilicus
- not on the outer thigh
- hold skin across injection site or pinch skin
- inject over several seconds
Things to remember when injecting insulin and heparin
Check dose and type don't aspirate wait before withdrawing needle don't rub rotate sites Heparin- change needle before giving
what is the angle for an intradermal injections
5-15 degrees
What are parenteral routes
IV, ID injections, Subcut, and IM injections
what is the usual dose for a skin test (ID)?
usual does is given from a 1-mL syringe, with a 25-30 gauge needle and is usually 0.1 mL
what is the usual dose for Subcut injections?
Nonirritating substances up to 1mL with a 25-30 gauge needle
