What is occupational balance?
- perceived impact of occupations on one another is harmonious, cohesive, and under control
- subjectively defined
- balance or imbalance can enhance or retract from health
How is occupational balance related to health?
- too few occupations and passive occupations with little challenge = loss of hope, meaning, capabilities, social isolation, alietnation, and wasting one’s life
- too many occupations = exhaustion and/or other psychosocial consequences
- valued social roles = increased satisfaction an community participation
What are 4 concepts related to time use?
- occuaptional pattterns (rituals, habits, routines)
- Temporality: the subjective experience of time (occupational meaning and boredom)
- Occupational balance/imbalance
- occupational disengagement
What can time use look like for individuals with mental illness?
- spend less time in productive or active leisure (unless in a manic episode)
- spend more time in passive activities
- report lower life satisfaction, quality of life, and well being comapred to those with other patterns of activities
What time use look like across childhood?
- structured leisure activities
- school-related activities
- enjoyment in activities
What does time use look like across older adulthood?
- reduced invovlement in formal productivity roles (b/c htey are retired)
- maintaining involvement in important life roles supports overall life satisfaction (ex: being a grandparent)

- AOI does not look at individual value of activity and how much society values it
- MOQ has an emphasis on how much society values the activity being performed
- Different structure (checkboxes vs open space)
- AOI is more open-ended and has a section for additional comments
- AOI more engaging through more personalized/reflective data collection (i.e. can write the type of work vs just “work”)
- MOQ probes about the reason behind doing the activity (allows for better understanding of the client/their time use priorities)
- MOQ categorizes occupations
- AOI asks about typical day, MOQ asks about previous day
