Week2- Realism Flashcards
(13 cards)
who created a typology for understanding international relations that based on three levels of analysis?
Kenneth Waltz (1959)
What are the three categorize Kenneth was classified the internationals theories into?
1- the first level explains International politics as driven by actions of individuals, or outcomes psychological
2- driven by the domestic regimes of state.
3- the role of systemic factors (the effect that international anarchy was existing on state behavior.
Level 1 Individual -level of analysis
Factors affect on individual’s actions:
COGNITIVE: trying to make good tactical and strategic choices
EMOTIONAL:
PSYCHOLOGICAL: frustration>aggression
BIOLOGICAL: Ethology, gender
PERCEPTIONS:
*there are example on the slides.
Level 2 (Internal Structure of states- level of analysis)
many example on the slide. (10)
Level 3: System- level of analysis (e.g: NATO, ISS, Twitter, Drug Trafficking…)
it is about how the organizations and the other factor like social media affect on the global analysis.
Classical Realism
- They think International Politics(IP) is driven by Waltz’s Second Level (The states)
INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM: is Anarchy (Lawlessness or no officer for the nations)
State of politics: conflict
Key actor on global stages: States
States want: Power
Tow important terms: - “Unitary” when domestic policies are less interest .
-“Rationa” states pursue predictable, strategies based on calculation.
What are the tow categorize of realism
1- classical realism.
2-Neo-Realism
Classical Realism *Survival * Sovereignty *Power Politics (what is the idea of classical realism
Global politics is a self help system- states must look after themselves.
Realists hate the third level because they think the state is only
most important person in neo-realism
John Mearsheimer
Neo-Realism
- it is first outlined by Kenneth Waltz 1979
Principles of neorealism: - Search of power limits- states really seek security
- Excessive power grap can prompt security dilemma
- States will balance
- Alliance Behavior:
rather than bandwagon in alliances.
Bipolar system more stable than Multi polar systems
Neo-Realism
Hegemon: is a single powerful state that controls or dominates lesser states like Roman Empire
Similarities between Classical realism and New Realism:
- explain world as it is, not as it should be
- domestic politics separate from foreign policy
- States rational actors not moral agents.
- power and/ security define stats’ “interest”
- Pervasiveness of conflicts.
-morality a tool of powerful, not true motivation.
International system stays basically the same.
Differences between Classical realism and Neo-Realism
1- ACTORS:
- Classical: some role for leaders’ characters, actors in system may change
- Neorealists: SOVEREIGN STATES are only important actors
2- Interests:
C: Power.
Neo: Security
3-source of interests:
C: Human nature.
Neo: Structure of system
4- METHODS:
C: More inductive, HISTORICAL APPROACH.
Neo: more deductive, LOGIC OF SYSTEM.
