formed by a few tribes for self defence but the slave trade profits made them one of the strongest groups

after 1807 they were resentful of the british influence in westafrica because it harmed their slavery opportunities

ashanti start war because of transfer of dutch possessions but the dutch had been on good terms with the ashanti. britain successful and gain good publicity wolseley helped defeat ashanti
