Westward Expansion
When the US expanded from the original 13 states on the East Coast to the Pacific Ocean
Manifest Destiny
“God has given the right to expand to the Pacific, even if it means taking territory away from others.”
Louisiana Purchase (1803)
- Jefferson bought a huge territory from France, which was West of the Mississippi River
- Doubled the size of the US
Texas Annexation (1845)
Texas broke away from Mexico, and eventually became added to the US
Mexican Cession (1848)
- Mexico was forced to give up 1/3 of its territory after the US won the Mexican-American War
- Modern-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada
Erie Canal
Waterway connececting Hudson River to Lake Erie
“Indian Removal Act”
- Signed by Andrew Jackson (1830)
- Allowed the gov to negotiate with Native American tribes to exchange their land in eastern US for territory west of the Mississippi River
- “Trail of Tears:” forcing tribes to relocate from their ancestral homes
Homestead Act
Law allowing citizens who had not fought against the US gov to claim 160 acres of land in exchange for living and improving it
Transcontinental Railroad
First railroad to cross the US, connecting Atlantic & Pacific Oceans (1869)
California Gold Rush
Period of mass migration to California in search of gold (1848-1855)
Sectionalism
- Westward expansion increase divisions between North & South
- Increased tensions over slavery
