Posteriorly, is the most superficial of the muscles of the leg, and forms the proximal part of the calf

The MEDIAL head originates from the popliteal surface of the femoral shaft and the posterior surface of the medial condyle and the LATERAL head originates from the lateral aspect of the lateral condyle of the femur

Posterior surface of calcaneus via the calacneal (Achilles) tendon
