Renovations
The fact or process of repairing and improving sth, especially a building.
Ex:
- The old Victorian house is in need of renovation.
- The renovation process and decoration took four months.
Perk
An advantage or something extra, such as money or goods, that you are given because of your job.
Ex:
- I only eat here because it’s free - one of the perks of the job.
- Having such easy access to some of the best cinema and theatre is one of the perks of living in Sydney.
To add up
To increase gradually until there is a large amount.
Ex:
- For a hit show, profits can add up to millions of dollars.
- The little things we do add up.
Real estate market
The buying and selling of land and building.
Ex:
- He’ll look for bargains after the real estate market shakes out.
- The whole of the real estate market will be thrown into a state of confusion.
Property
The thing or things that someone owns.
Ex:
- He owns a number of properties on the south coast.
- My suspicions were confirmed when police raided the property.
To incur
To experience sth, usually sth unpleasant, as a result of actions you have taken.
Ex:
- Any expense you may incur will be chargeable to the company.
- The play has incurred the anger of both audiences and critics.
To remedy
To deal with or improve an unpleasant or difficult situation.
Ex:
- This mistake must be remedied immediately.
- To remedy the situation, the water must be chemically treated.
Mortgage
An agreement that allows you to borrow money from a bank or similar organization.
Ex:
- The mortgage is a drain on our financial resources.
- They were unable to meet their mortgage repayments.
To renew something
To increase the life of/or replace sth old.
Ex:
- I’ll use this material to renew the chair covers.
- Every year I renew my membership of the sports club.
Lease
A legal agreement in which you pay money in order to use a building, piece of land, vehicle, ect, for a period.
Ex:
- At the end of the lease, the land will be returned to the original owner.
- They took out a lease on a seven-acre field.
To be at the mercy of sth/sb
Completely in the power or under the control of sth/sb.
Ex:
- I’m not going to put myself at the mercy of the bank.
- The prisoners pleaded for mercy.
Renewal
A situation in which sth begins again after it stopped or was interrupted.
Ex:
- Mark’s contract comes up fot renewal at the end of this year.
- Easter eggs symbolize the renewal of life.
Amenity
Sth that makes a place comfortable or easy to live in.
Ex:
- A sauna in the hotel would be a useful amenity.
- These houses lack basic amenities such as heat and running water.
Upkeep
The process of keeping sth in good condition.
Ex:
- Most of the money is spent on the upkeep of the building.
- The local council is responsible for the upkeep of roads.
Down payment
A payment you make when you buy sth that is only part of the full price, with the rest to be paid later.
Ex:
- We’ve almost got enough money to make a down payment on a house.
- We are saving for a down payment on a house.
A mortgage
A legal arrangement by which you borrow money from a bank in order to buy a house, and pay back the money over a period of years.
Ex:
- They’ve taken out a 30 - year mortgage.
- We decided to use Fred’s redundancy money to pay off the mortgage.
Refurbishment
Work such as painting, repairing, and cleaning that is done to make a building look new again.
Ex:
- The hotel is closed for refurbishment.
Deposit
A part of the cost of sth you are buying that you pay some time before you pay the rest of it.
- We put down a deposit on a house.
At a moment’s notice
Used to emphasize how little time someone has to do sth or how little warning is given.
Ex: - We can’t be expect to just drop everything and leave at a moment’s notice.
