LYNCHING
What does it mean?
-hanging by an angry mob because you are a suspect of crimes.
Grandfather Clause
What was it?
-If your father or grandfather voted before 1867 then you can vote. All blacks did not vote until 1867 they could not vote
Segregation
What was it?
Separation between the Blacks and the whites.
AMNESTY
What does it mean?
-a pardon to all white Southerners except Confederate leaders, who were willing to swear an oath of loyalty to the union
Sharecropping
A person who gives a share of his crops to the landlord as rent.
Poll Tax
What was it?
-a certain amount of money a person had to pay in order to vote, this prevented most blacks but also, some whites from voting.
Carpetbaggers
Who were they?
-Republicans who came to the south to take advantage of the situation. Called carpetbaggers because their bags were made out of carpet materials.
Scalawags
Who were they?
A white southerner working or supporting the federal government during reconstruction. Means a worthless rascal.
Impeach
What does it mean?
To bring charges against a public office for wrongdoing in office.
Literacy Tests
What were they?
-a person had to read a difficult part from the constitution, this prevented most blacks, and some whites from voting because they were not educated as well as other people
