What Happens When Fuels Are Burnt Flashcards
(5 cards)
Name substances released and produced when fossil fuels are burnt.
- Harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide
- Dust containing heavy metals such as lead and zinc
- Ash, soot, smoke
What happens when carbon monoxide is inhaled?
Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous, colourless and oudourless gas which cannot be easily detected. When it is inhaled, it combines with haemoglobin in blood to form carboxyhaemohlobin. This decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. The deficiency of oxygen may cause headaches, dizziness and respiratory issues.
How much is carbon dioxide responsible for global warming?
87%
What is global warming.
This happens when there is excess carbon dioxide in the air which traps the sun’s heat and prevents it from being reflected back which causes heating of the Earth, melting of ice caps and flooding in low lying areas.
What causes acid rain?
Dissolving of sulphur and nitrogen oxides in water.
