(31 cards)
morphologically
words, suffixes, species names and how they relate
phylogenetically
the evolutionary history and development of insects
unsegmented
whole, not segmented body parts (humans)
what are the major regions of an insect?
head, thorax, abdomen
what are the basic characteristic of an insect?
a segmented body, the three major regions, an exoskeleton, compound eyes, pairs of appendages
what is the modern definition of an insect?
if it has an exoskeleton, tagma, and hexapods
hexapods
six legs made up of the fusion of ancestral segments by jointed appendages
tagma
the three major body regions
ocellus
simple eye
labium
lower lip
clypeus, labrum
upper lip
mandible
upper jaw
maxilla
lower jaw
what is are antennae used for?
smell
what are the two types of eyes on an insect?
compound and simple eye
what is the first thoracic segment?
the foreleg
what is the second thoracic segment?
the forewing and midleg
what is the third thoracic segment?
the hindwing and hindleg
how do you tell the difference between a male and female insect?
The female’s abdomen is larger, more protected and is pointed at the end. The male’s abdomen is smaller and consists of two genitalia parts, one being pointed
what are some major internal systems of an insect?
nervous, digestive, circulatory, excretory systems and musculature
hemolymph
insect “blood”
how is hemolymph used?
it is not part of respiration, used in hormone transport (signaling), immune response, and excretion
what are some characteristics of the circulatory system?
an open, nonpressurized system suffusing blood through the body. can be exposed to the environment, and pumped by the heart
hemocoel
the primary body cavity of an insect, suffused by hemolymph
