What is microbiology? Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is medical microbiology?
The study of microorganisms which are of medical importance and are capable of causing disease in humans
Why is it important to know about microbiology?
- Infections cause mortality and morbidity
- 30% of patients on antibiotics
- 1 in 10 acquires an infection while in hospital
Normal flora
Microorganisms that help with a range of useful functions such as digestion and preventing pathogens
Contamination
Presence of an organism in a culture that was not present in the original sample
Colonisation
Presence of an organism at a site but not causing symptoms or disease
Infection
Where organisms invade the body site and their multiplication initiates a tissue reaction producing symptoms of disease
Virus
- Small and unable to replicate interdependently
2. Invade host cell and use their cellular macinary to replicate
Bacteria
Larger, prokaryotic, capable of independent replication and treat with antibiotics
Fungi
Eukaryotic, yeasts and molds, opportunistic diseases
Method for classifying bacteria
Gram stain
Gram positive
Purple
Gram Negative
Pink
