What is sociology
Sociology is the study of the society in which we live - understanding and explaining what goes on.
Who studies our society
Sociologists study how it works
There are different types of sociologists
One- feminists , they believe society is unfair and is dominated by men
Two-Marxists , they think everything is made to benefit the bourgeoisie.
Three-functionalists , they think we need everything to function properly in society
What is gender roles
Gender roles is what we expect from the sexes e.g. masculinity and femininity
We believe men should be strong and women caring and emotional.
This begins in the family through canalisation where children are channelled into a particular direction - blue for boys and pink for girls

How do schools help with gender roles
Subject options that are seen as mainly boys and girls subjects
Construction- boys textiles- girls
Boys often dominate the playground with ball games and girls sit on the side lines chatting
How does the media influence gender roles
The media portrays the different genders such as women as house wives and mothers. Video games show women as helpless or sex objects.
A boy playing with dolls may be bullied for it.
Boys also are encouraged to be sexually promiscuous, gaining status in the male group.
