Q

What are the steps?

A

Introduce yourself

Inform the resident of your action

Ask if the residents arms are resting inside of the armrest

Check if residents feet are on footsteps securely

When chair is not in motion, check to see handbrakes are locked

When going down an incline/entering an elevator/going over a curb always turn the wheelchair so that it is descending backwards

In the elevator do not allow residents to face the back wall

Avoid short stops

When a resident can manage the wheelchair, allow them to do so, for short distances. Assure that you are available to give assistance

Always stay with resident until the person in charge is notified that the resident has arrived and given you permission to leave

Never lift a resident out of a wheelchair. Call staff is they wish to get out

Stay alert and don’t rush

Only take one person at a time.
