Q

What ares some of the strengths of the cognitive approach?

A

Influenced many areas of pyschology - usefully applied in therapy like CBT that successfully treat disorders like depression - also applied to developmental pyschology - piaget - developing the theory that children don’t think the same way as adults - 8 or 9 year olds not thinking abstract thought - solve math problem - see in concrete form like counting sticks - had an affect on primary schools - making the use of concrete examples

A strength would further be that it is objective and controlled research - memory research conducted in strict lab conditions - using bran scan techniques - like the PET scan to see what is with the LTM and the STM

Q

What may be some of the weaknesses which is then further involved with the cognitive approach?

A

Does not consider internal external factors and internal factors of behaviour, fails to consider the important elements to do with both nature and nurture - roles of genes for the human cognition is ignored, research in intelligence has looked at the influence of genes, through the twin studies - social and cultural factors often being ignored - piaget failing to consider gender and culture on the development of children

Determinism (actions being determined by are internal and external forces) People acquire there schemas through direct experiences - piaget suggesting cognitive development being the development of schemas - young age - 4 legs and fur a dog - later learning more schemas like the one for a cat - schemas developing through social interaction - stereotypes - like women with blonde hair being considered as being stupid - cultural sterotypes and could determine the way we are interpriting the situations
