minority rule
P too conservative in its nature
Too many different opinions
Parliament was too conservative in its nature?
- majority MPs not radical
- Only monarchy could provide order and stability
- Major reason for rumps dissolution in 1653 - wanted new elections = More conserv MPs = limit army influence CO was not happy lol
- First PP and second PP are example of conservatism due to the adoption of instrument of monarchy ( made CO lord protector like a monarchy)
- Second PP - Humble petition and advice - Crown (damnn they must love him) + re establish lords and commons hereditary rule
> MPs dc about stuarts they care bout concept of MOnarchy
Reliance on the army?
CO and all experiments at gov relied on the army to exist. There was a fear of the army’s pwr and the expense.
> Rump was dissolved due to them trying to limit army’s pwr leading them to influence CO to dissolve it
> Army was God’s instrument to bring a ‘godly reformation’ according to CO
> Even CO couldnt control them at times
> 1st protectorate parliament was destabilised partly by the army who felt cromwell was moving away from republican ideas by becoming lord protector
> it was largely cause of the arm CO refused the crown
> Without the army, stability would not have been achieved to the extent it was.
> Major generals rule was introduced due to the response to the fear of uprisings in Wiltshire
> iT WAS RADICALISM WITHIN THE ARMY IN 1659, WHEN THEY GOT RID OF RICHARD AND RECALLED THE RUMP.

Too many different opinions?
key reason to the failure of the experiments at govs was the impossibility of pleasing a varied groups of ppl.
The rump angered the army cos it took too long to pass reforms and saw it as too moderate.
Nominated assembly ended when the moderated members voted caused they worried of extreme ideas from radical groups e.g. fifth monarchist
Conservative nature in this parliament was important but some mem were far radical = problem
