Why was economics an issue by 1931?
- foreign investors and markets needed a calm, confident and United government which Churchill was not deemed to be able to achieve
- seen as a renegade: pre war speeches attacking Conserv views in House of Lords
- many economists claimed he made wrong decision returning Britain to gold standard when he was COE in 1925 which Brit left in September 1931
- When Conservative joined with Labour and some liberals in 1931 to deal with perceived national financial and economic crisis there was no room for Churchill
