How did Wundt and his co-workers investigate introspection?
He and his co-workers recorded their experiences of various stimuli they were presented with such as sounds and objects. They divided their observations into thoughts, images and sensations.
Strength of Wilhelm Wundt’s research.
One strength of Wundts work is that some of his methods were well-controlled.
For example, all introspections are recorded in a controlled environment in the lab which ensures extraneous variables are removed. This suggests that Wundts research can be a forerunner to later scientific approaches.
Limitation of Wundt’s research.
One limitation is that some aspects of Wundts research could be classed as unscientific today. For example, Wundt relied on participants self-reporting their mental processes which meant they could have hidden some of their thoughts. This limits the validity of Wundts research.
